How a Tide Clock Works

A tide clock shows the state of the tide rather than standard time. Instead of tracking hours and minutes, it follows the natural rhythm of the ocean.

Most coastlines experience two high tides and two low tides each day, with a full tide cycle lasting approximately 12 hours and 25 minutes. A tide clock is specially geared to rotate once during this cycle.

  • When the hand points to High Tide, the sea level is at its highest.

  • As the hand moves toward Falling Tide, the water level is decreasing.

  • Low Tide indicates the lowest sea level.

  • Rising Tide shows the water level increasing again toward the next high tide.

The numbers on the dial represent the hours remaining until the next high or low tide, helping you quickly understand where you are in the tidal cycle at a glance.

Setting Your Tide Clock

To set the clock:

  1. Find the current local tide status (high or low tide) for your location.

  2. Turn the hand to match the current tide position.

  3. Once set, the clock will continue to follow the tidal rhythm automatically.

Important Note

Tide clocks are most accurate in locations with regular semi-diurnal tides (two highs and two lows per day). Local geography, weather, and coastal conditions can affect tides, so the clock should be used as a general guide, not for navigation or safety-critical decisions.
